What is Auto-GPT?
Auto-GPT is a tool built using the ChatGPT API to auto-prompt ChatGPT. With Auto-GPT A user creates a list of exhaustive goals they want to accomplish, and the tool uses a combination of web search results and ChatGPT prompts to complete those goals.
The utility of this tool over the traditional ChatGPT interface is that, with the traditional interface, the user generally has to guide the model to get complete responses to complex tasks/goals by subsequent prompts after the initial prompt. With Auto-GPT, the model builds up a list of subsequent prompts to itself using the results of previous prompts.
Who Created Auto-GPT?
Auto-GPT was created by Toran Bruce Richards in 2023 under the GitHub username Torantulino. Based on Richards’ LinkedIn profile, he is the founder of Significant Gravitas, a company focused on “bringing the cutting edge benefits of game technology to non-game industries.”
Richards is a 2020 grad of Edinburgh Napier University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Game Development.
Richards’ GitHub profile has a few repositories, most of which appear to be from games or graphics he developed while in University. He has a few repositories that contain tools built using ChatGPT's API, as well as repositories with Auto-GPT plugins. Moreover, it seems Richards' interest in AI is a function of the recent hype surrounding ChatGPT and generative AI models.
